Occupational Therapy: What Is It?

OT helps children improve their participation in all areas of life. Self care, feeding, social emotional skills, and most importantly play are the main occupations of childhood. In occupational therapy, we help children gain the skills to live life to the fullest. OT addresses all areas of occupation using an individualized approach, ensuring that children have the strength, coordination, and attention needed to reach their goals. Children may benefit from occupational therapy if they:

  • Avoid coloring, cutting, writing

  • Eat a very limited number of foods

  • Struggle to potty train

  • Play too rough with peers without meaning to

  • Have frequent meltdowns

  • Avoid playground equipment or swings

  • Seek out intense movement opportunities (eg, crashing, being upside down)

  • Struggle to remain in their desk or circle-time spot

What to Expect at Your Appointment

During an occupational therapy evaluation, our therapists examine:

  • Primitive reflexes
  • Visual perception
  • Bilateral coordination
  • Sensory processing skills
  • Fine motor skills
  • Gross motor skills
  • Executive functioning
  • Motor planning

This extensive process looks like play, but it gives us a holistic view of how a child is functioning and participating in occupations.

After the evaluation, we are able to provide parents with a plan of care to improve on any deficits. We work with parents to set goals and refer to other providers if indicated.
