Physical Therapy: What Is It?

PT helps children attain physical goals, including mobility, strength, coordination, endurance, and flexibility. Physical therapists help children with developmental, congenital, skeletal, and acquired conditions. Our goal is to give children increased independence and mobility so they can participate fully at school, home, and in the community. Children may benefit from physical therapy if they:

  • Struggle with ball skills

  • Appear uncoordinated

  • Fatigue more easily than peers

  • Have asymmetrical positioning

  • Are not walking by 16 months

  • Cannot crawl

  • Struggle to navigate uneven terrain

  • Fall frequently

What to Expect at Your Appointment

During a physical therapy evaluation, we will use a combination of observation and standardized testing to reveal any deficits. We will examine your child’s preferred movement patterns during various play activities and establish goals related to muscle strength and mobility. We use a child-centered approach and identify each child’s strengths and interests to make therapy enjoyable.
